      The artwork

Ondergang 5 by Arjen van der Linden measures 60 x 180 cm and stands out through its wide, panoramic composition. The painting shows a modern city by the water, rendered in a quasi-abstract style in which buildings, harbour elements and horizon lines merge into a rhythmic whole of colour, form and structure. The skyline seems to be built from light. White and soft grey tones form an almost graphic city that stands out against a deep blue-black sky. Between the buildings, subtle accents of orange, red and sandy tones appear, giving the work warmth without losing its calm character. The water in the foreground reflects the atmosphere of the sky and creates a sense of depth and openness. Although the painting refers to a city, it is not about a recognisable location. Arjen van der Linden allows the viewer to give meaning to the image. Is it a harbour city at sunset, a skyline at dusk or a memory of a distant journey? It is precisely this openness that makes the work continuously interesting. Thanks to its elongated size of 60 x 180 cm, this painting comes beautifully into its own above a sofa, sideboard, long dining table or in an entrance hall where the horizontal composition has enough space to show its full effect.

      The artist

Arjen van der Linden is a versatile artist from Amersfoort who brings together painting, music, poetry and writing in his work. As a drummer, city poet and painter, rhythm plays a central role in everything he creates. This sense of rhythm translates into powerful compositions in which movement, tension and harmony are constantly present. His well-known Intercity series shows modern, quasi-abstract cityscapes in which urban energy is central. Buildings, streets and horizon lines are not depicted literally, but form an imaginative interpretation of the dynamics of the city. His paintings often contain hidden details and subtle references that reveal themselves only after a longer look. Van der Linden mainly works with oil and acrylic paint on large canvases. His brushwork ranges from powerful and expressive to subtle and quiet. There is always a tension between abstraction and recognition, between calm and movement. It is precisely this combination that makes his work accessible, yet deeply intriguing.

      Interior advice by Decoration

The combination of light architecture, dark skies and calm water areas makes this artwork highly versatile within different interior styles. The work brings both tranquillity and character to a space.

Scenario 1 – Modern and refined

Combine the painting with a wall in Mystery Grey or Montmartre Grey. The grey tones enhance the architectural appearance of the work and create a calm, contemporary atmosphere. Materials such as steel, glass, light wood and linen connect beautifully with this style.

Scenario 2 – Deep and atmospheric

For more contrast, a wall in Casper Blue or Sint Helena Blue can form a beautiful background. The blue tones connect with the sky and water in the painting, creating a harmonious whole. Add warm wood types and soft fabrics to create balance.

Scenario 3 – Hotel Chic with character

To make the artwork stand out even more, choose a wall in Black Lily or Cornwall Black. The light skyline then seems almost to glow against the dark background. Combine with brass details, velvet, natural stone and atmospheric lighting for a luxurious look.
