      The artwork

Ondergang 4 by Arjen van der Linden measures 60 x 180 cm and immediately makes an impression with its elongated composition. The painting shows a quasi-abstract cityscape in which buildings, horizon lines and reflections are reduced to powerful forms and fields of colour. The city seems to emerge from a landscape of colour, light and movement. What stands out immediately is the contrast between the light buildings and the dark sky. The skyline is built up from soft white and sandy tones, alternated with warm accents of terra, rust and orange. In the foreground, a deep reddish-purple colour dominates, giving the work an almost theatrical appearance. This creates a tension between calm and energy, between light and dark. The painterly structure and layering ensure that the work continues to change the longer you look. Details appear and disappear again, making the painting seem to tell new stories each time. It is precisely this combination of abstraction and recognition that makes the work intriguing and timeless. Thanks to its panoramic size of 60 x 180 cm, this artwork comes beautifully into its own above a long sofa, dining table, sideboard or in a spacious entrance hall where the horizontal line of the painting can be fully experienced.

      The artist

Arjen van der Linden is a versatile artist from Amersfoort who divides his creativity between painting, music, poetry and writing. As a drummer, city poet and painter, rhythm is the guiding thread in everything he creates. This sense of rhythm is clearly visible in his paintings, where movement, tension and harmony are constantly present. His well-known Intercity series consists of modern, quasi-abstract cityscapes in which urban energy is central. Buildings, streets and skylines are not depicted literally, but form a free interpretation of the city and its dynamics. His paintings often contain hidden details and visual riddles that slowly reveal themselves to the viewer. Van der Linden mainly works with oil and acrylic paint on large canvases. His brushwork is powerful, expressive and generous, but can also be soft and sensitive. There is always a balance between abstraction and recognition, which makes his work accessible while also inviting deeper reflection.

      Interior advice by Decoration

The combination of warm red tones, light architecture and dark contrasts makes this artwork particularly suitable for interiors where character and atmosphere come together. The work can function both as a striking eye-catcher and as a connecting element within the space.

Scenario 1 – Warm and stylish

Combine the painting with a wall in Terra Cotta Pink or Umber Brown. The warm colours enhance the red and rust tones in the work and create a rich, inviting interior. Materials such as walnut wood, leather and ceramics connect beautifully with this atmosphere.

Scenario 2 – Contemporary with contrast

For a more modern interior, you can work with Mystery Grey, Snow White and Cornwall Black. The neutral base allows the powerful colours of the painting to stand out even more, while black accents create a graphic look.

Scenario 3 – Hotel Chic with depth

To give the painting a luxurious appearance, choose a wall in Black Lily. The dark background enhances the contrast between the light skyline and the warm colours in the foreground. Add brass details, velvet and atmospheric lighting for an elegant and exclusive atmosphere.
